photorefractive keratectomy; indications, techniques, prevention & treatment of complications

چکیده
photorefractive keratectomy is a preprogrammed surface corneal refractive ablation which is aimed to reduce or eliminate myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism through the removal of the corneal surface epithelium and basement membrane and the application of excimer laser photoablation to bowman membrane and anterior stroma. the epithelium then begins to cover the wound, in direct contact with the anterior stroma instead of bowman membrane. since approval of the use of the excimer laser to reshape the cornea, significant developments in the correction of refractive errors have been achieved. despite these advances, certain limitations and complications do exist. so it is time well spent for the practitioners to ensure that the patient has realistic expectations and a thorough knowledge of the complications . the surgeon should not get involved in special cases without previous experience. this article relies on published literature to describe the basic knowledge, indications, surgical issues, patient selection, mitomycin use, and prevention of the complicating.

Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was conducted at Laser Vision Center, Model Town, Lahore. It comprised of 200 patients(400 eyes) that underwent PRK on Summit Apex Plus excimer laser from 20 Feb 2004 to 3 June 2005. All consecutive patients with complete relevant data were included in the study. Three months postoperatively, the uncorrected visual acuity and complications in each...

PURPOSE To assess the outcomes of conductive keratoplasty (CK) for patients with complications related to LASIK or photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). DESIGN Retrospective, noncomparative, interventional case series. PARTICIPANTS Sixteen eyes of 15 patients were treated using CK after complications of initial LASIK or PRK surgeries. Five cases are described in detail. INTERVENTION Rehabili...

PURPOSE To assess the efficacy and safety of topography-guided photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) for keratoconus and to estimate the subsequent risk of progression. METHODS This is a retrospective follow-up study. Between 1998 and 2013, 28 eyes of 23 patients (age 17-60) with grade 1-3 keratoconus received topography-guided PRK. Corrected-distance visual acuity (CDVA), keratometry, pachymetry...

Purpose: To evaluate. long term efficacy, safety and stability of PRK for low and moderate myopia. Methods: 110 patients were treated for myopia up to 6D with the Summit Excimed excimer laser. The optical zone was 5mm in all cases. Manifest t&action. refraction under cycloplegla, comenl haze and comeal topography werc studied at D15, 1. 3, 6. 12. and 24 months after the surgery. متن کاملCorneal ectasia after photorefractive keratectomy.
Two patients developed corneal ectasia after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). Case 1 had evidence of early keratoconus preoperatively, with manifest refractions of -4.00 +2.50 x 160 (20/20) in the right eye and -7.00 +3.00 x 180 (20/30) in the left eye; thin corneas (472 microm and 441 microm, respectively); and inferior paracentral steepening in the right eye and central steepening in the le...
متن کاملChoroidal neovascularization following photorefractive keratectomy
PURPOSE To describe a case of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) following photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) to correct myopia. METHODS We performed PRK in both eyes of a 20-year-old girl to correct myopia. Refractive error was -4.75 -2.25 × 5 in the right eye and -5.00 -1.25 × 180 in the left eye. Metamorphopsia was noticed by the patient in the right eye one month after the surgical procedu...
